SDG 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns

Tires that are not recycled or burned mostly end up in landfills — some 16%, according to USTMA data.

In this case, the photographs depicted the work of Ecopneus, a Milan-based company that aims to track, collect and process one of the world’s major sources of pollution: end-of-life tyres.

Ecopneus is an Italian consortium that manages end-of-life tyres (ETLs). Founded in 2011, this non-profit institution aims to organise and promote the recovery, recycling and proper disposal of ETLs in Italy.

After recovering the tyres, Ecopneus gives these materials a new life cycle by converting them into athletics tracks, football pitches and basketball courts, which are built on the outskirts of large cities, thus creating also new spaces of conviviality for the community.
