Colombia
In Colombia, gold mining has had a huge impact on the environment, workers’ health and working conditions of the communities involved. About 350,000 people carry out work in the gold sector through artisanal production that sustains many families in the most remote areas.
Mining can negatively or positively impact society depending on the choices made by local institutions and the conditions guaranteed to miners, who are often victims of internal conflicts, child labor or gender discrimination. Using mercury during the mining of gold pollutes the environment, thus compromising the health of people.
In 2018, Colombia adopted the Fairmined initiative, certifying the gold mined without the use of mercury and sustainably, contributing to the development of mining communities. For their commitment, producers receive a cash premium that can be reinvested in projects relating to gender equality, the environment and human rights.
